Found across a broad sweep of South American river basins, Hemiodopsis immaculatus is a sleek, torpedo-shaped characin native to the dark, tannin-stained waters of the Amazon and Orinoco drainages, including major tributaries like the Negro, Tapajós, Trombetas, and Jutai. It grows to a solid size for a characin, reaching close to ten inches in well-kept conditions, and its build reflects a life spent moving fast in open water. Despite that speed, it is genuinely peaceful and poses little threat to similarly sized tankmates, making it a workable option for a large community setup of South American species. The tank does need to be spacious. This is not a fish that tolerates cramped quarters well, and it needs room to stretch out and move. Décor that replicates its natural habitat, with soft, slightly acidic water and some open swimming lanes, will help it settle in and show its best behavior. Diet is not complicated since it accepts a wide range of foods as an omnivore, which keeps day-to-day care manageable. It is egg-laying by nature, though breeding accounts in captivity are limited. With a potential lifespan of up to twelve years, this is a long-term commitment for an intermediate keeper with the right setup.
