The featherfin coralfish (Heniochus acuminatus) is one of the most recognizable fish in the Indo-Pacific, instantly identified by its tall, flowing dorsal fin that extends well beyond the body like a white flag. Bold black-and-white vertical bands wrap the body, and a small horn-like projection sits above each eye in adults. In the wild, this species turns up across an enormous range, from the Persian Gulf and East African coast all the way out to Japan and Micronesia, favoring deep lagoons, reef channels, and the quieter sections of outer reef slopes. Juveniles tend to roam alone and will occasionally pick external parasites off other fish, showing a hint of cleaner behavior that fades with age. Adults are typically seen in pairs, which is worth keeping in mind when planning a display tank. In the aquarium, featherfins are genuinely peaceful toward fish of similar size and temperament, though they can be scrappy with their own kind if space is tight. Their omnivorous appetite makes feeding relatively straightforward. The main caveats are the tank space they need and their reputation for bothering small invertebrates and coral polyps, so a dedicated fish-only or FOWLR setup suits them far better than a reef.
