The Horned Bannerfish (Heniochus chrysostomus) is one of the more visually dramatic members of the bannerfish group, recognized immediately by its bold dark and white banding and the long trailing filament extending from its dorsal fin. Across its range, from western India all the way out to the Pitcairn Islands and north to southern Japan, it's a common sight on coral-rich reef flats, lagoons, and seaward reef slopes. Juveniles tend to stay tucked away in estuaries and sheltered lagoons on their own, while adults are typically spotted cruising in pairs, which is one of those appealing behaviors that translates nicely into the aquarium setting. In the wild, coral polyps make up a big part of its diet, which is the key thing to keep in mind for reef tanks. This fish is not reliably coral-safe, and mixing it with stony or soft corals carries real risk. In a fish-only or FOWLR setup, it's a peaceful community member that generally gets along well provided its tankmates are similarly calm. It's not the most forgiving species for complete beginners, but a hobbyist with some marine experience and a well-established system should find it rewarding to keep.
