Found across a broad sweep of the Pacific and eastern Indian Ocean, Heniochus singularis is the biggest member of the bannerfish group, reaching close to a foot in length as an adult. It turns up on deep lagoon edges and seaward reef faces where the coral growth is dense and the reef structure drops away sharply. The kind of dramatic vertical terrain that makes this fish feel right at home. Adults tend to be solitary or found in small loose groups, while juveniles are even more elusive, tucking into inshore reef areas and staying well hidden. That natural secretiveness means it is not a species you will encounter every day, even on a dive trip through its range. In the aquarium this fish needs a reasonably spacious setup to accommodate its size and roaming tendencies. The most important practical note for reef keepers is that it feeds on coral polyps in the wild and will behave the same way in a tank. This is not a reef-safe fish by any measure. Given that caveat, it is considered manageable for less experienced saltwater keepers in a fish-only context, and its long potential lifespan makes it a worthwhile commitment for those who can meet its needs.
