Lizard Loach
Homaloptera leonardi
A tiny hillstream crawler that clings to rocks and hops across the riverbed.

About
Found in the fast-flowing, high-gradient streams of the Mekong basin and Malaysia, Homaloptera leonardi is a small balitorid loach that has adapted remarkably to life in turbulent water. The body is flattened top to bottom, the paired fins splay out horizontally, and the whole underside works together as a suction cup, letting this fish grip rocks and substrate against strong currents. Rather than swimming freely, it crawls and hops its way across hard surfaces. Behaviour that earns the group the nickname 'lizard loaches' among hobbyists, and it's easy to see why once you watch one in action. In the aquarium, replicating that fast-flow environment is the key challenge: a strong current, smooth or rocky substrate, and well-oxygenated water make all the difference. The species is less aggressive than the structured data suggests. Minor squabbles can occur with related balitorids, but genuine hostility is uncommon. It does seem to need the company of its own kind to settle in properly, so picking up a group of four or more is a good call. Tankmates from similar hillstream habitats, danios, devarios, hillstream gobies, and smaller catfishes, tend to work well. No aquarium breeding has been documented so far.
