Found drifting through the dark, tannin-stained rivers and flooded swamps of Amazonian Brazil and the upper Orinoco basin, Hoplarchus psittacus is one of those cichlids that generates conflicting accounts depending on who you ask. The species occupies blackwater environments in the wild, the Rio Negro and its tributaries being classic haunts, where water is soft, acidic, and dimly lit. It grows to a respectable size, somewhere between eight and twelve inches in most aquarium specimens, with a deep-bodied, laterally compressed profile that's reminiscent of other large South American cichlids. In the wild it shifts its diet seasonally, picking off aquatic insects and crustaceans when floodwaters rise and turning toward fish as water levels drop. In captivity it accepts meaty foods readily enough. Despite the aggressive tag, many keepers find this species surprisingly reserved. It can actually be pushed around by bolder, more combative tankmates, which makes species selection genuinely important. Replicating its soft, warm, acidic natural water conditions seems to make a real difference in how settled and healthy these fish are long-term. It's not a beginner's fish, but an intermediate keeper who respects its water chemistry needs and chooses compatible tankmates thoughtfully should find it a rewarding and somewhat underappreciated species.
