The humphead cichlid (Cyphotilapia frontosa) is one of the most recognizable fish in the African cichlid hobby, built around that unmistakable nuchal hump that develops on the forehead of mature individuals. Native to the rocky depths of the northern half of Lake Tanganyika, this species spends its life in aggregations along the substrate, hunting snails, mussels, and smaller fish. The body is pale with broad dark vertical bands, most populations carry six, though the Kigoma form sports seven, and a wash of blue that intensifies in breeding males. Hobbyists commonly call them 'fronts' or 'frontosa,' and locality variants are often labeled carefully by collectors to keep bloodlines distinct. Despite the aggressive classification, fronts are more accurately described as dominant rather than constantly combative. They form a clear hierarchy within the group rather than holding individual territories. They genuinely seem to recognize their keepers and can be surprisingly interactive for large cichlids. A group of at least five is really the minimum, and ten or more brings out their natural social behavior properly. Breeding is rewarding but requires patience, since sexual maturity takes several years. Females are maternal mouthbrooders that carry eggs for well over a month, actually feeding the fry while they remain in the buccal cavity. A fascinating adaptation worth watching for.
