The giant tigerfish (Hydrocynus goliath) is one of the most formidable freshwater fish on the planet, native to the Congo River basin and Lake Tanganyika in central Africa, where it hunts large rivers and lakes as an apex predator. Its body is built for speed and power. Streamlined, heavily muscled, and equipped with a set of interlocking, dagger-like teeth that remain visible even when the mouth is shut. Those teeth are not just for show; this fish can tear chunks from prey rather than swallowing it whole, and adult specimens in the wild have been recorded exceeding 100 pounds. In the Congo, it is a legendary game fish pursued by anglers from around the world. Juveniles do shoal and can be kept in groups, but adults are solitary ambush predators that will destroy virtually any tankmate smaller than themselves without warning. Keeping one into adulthood is genuinely dangerous. Tank maintenance with a large specimen is no joke, and rehoming a fish approaching four feet long is nearly impossible. Captive breeding has never been achieved. Young fish occasionally appear in the trade and look manageable at that size, but this is one species where the hobbyist community broadly agrees: admire it in documentaries and leave it there.
