The Meta Tetra (Hyphessobrycon metae) is a small characin from the Orinoco River basin of South America, and it carries a bit of a reputation for causing confusion. Both in the hobby and in scientific literature. It has been repeatedly mixed up with close relatives like H. peruvianus and H. loretoensis, and mislabeled specimens still circulate in the trade today. For those who want the genuine article, the key is the color pattern: H. metae shows a dark marking concentrated on the caudal peduncle that extends onto the base of the median tail rays, with a yellow-to-orange patch at the base of each tail lobe. A subtle but consistent difference from its lookalikes. In terms of appearance, it is a slender, laterally compressed fish with a pale lateral stripe and a body depth that gives it a fairly elongate profile. Behaviorally, it is thoroughly peaceful and does best when kept in groups of eight or more, ideally a mix of males and females. In a well-put-together aquarium alongside comparably sized characins, smaller catfishes, or non-aggressive cichlids, a proper school really shows off how these fish move and interact. It sits at an intermediate care level, partly because its soft, acidic water preferences need some attention to get right.
