The False X-ray Tetra (Hyphessobrycon simulatus) is a small, peaceful characid from the coastal river systems of French Guiana, where it inhabits sluggish, swampy stretches and the calm margins of rivers in basins including the Maroni, Oyapock, and Sinnamary. Despite a name that invites comparison to the popular X-ray tetra, Pristella maxillaris, this species is actually quite distinct. It carries a noticeably larger humeral spot on the shoulder and has black pigmentation in the anal fin confined to just the first ray, rather than a broad blotch further along. It is genuinely uncommon in the hobby, and some fish sold under this name in the trade may not be the real thing, so sourcing from reputable suppliers is worthwhile. In the aquarium it is thoroughly peaceful and does best in groups of eight or more, ideally with a mix of males and females. A community setup suits it well, alongside other small characins, hatchetfish, lebiasinids, and smaller catfishes. Keeping it with other schooling species helps bring out cohesive group behavior that makes the tank look far more natural. Breeding in captivity has not been documented to date. A forgiving choice for newer fishkeepers who want something a little out of the ordinary.
