The Goldfin Tinfoil Barb (Hypsibarbus malcolmi) is a sizeable cyprinid from the river systems of mainland Southeast Asia, including the Mekong, Chao Phraya, and Mae Khlong basins as well as the Malay Peninsula. In the wild it tends to occupy mid-water to bottom depths in medium and large rivers, shifting between river sizes depending on the season. Larger waterways during dry periods, smaller tributaries when the rains arrive. It's typically found over coarse substrate in faster-moving water. Visually, the species has the reticulated scale patterning characteristic of the genus, where dark scale margins create a net-like effect across the body, and the fins often carry bright coloration with extended, falcate tips. The golden finnage being the feature that gives this fish its common name. The dorsal fin shows a darkened median portion that helps distinguish it from close relatives. Although not aggressive toward tankmates of similar size, its constant movement and enthusiastic feeding can stress smaller or more timid fish, and small companions may end up as a meal. As a schooling species, a group of six or more is strongly recommended. Lone individuals rarely thrive socially. Given the adult size this fish reaches, only large, well-filtered aquaria make practical sense. Breeding in captivity has not been documented.
