The yellow eyed silver barb (Hypsibarbus pierrei) is a sizeable cyprinid from the rivers of Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia, where it inhabits medium to large river systems across the region. Adults regularly reach well over a foot in length, so this is not a fish to underestimate when planning a tank. It needs serious space and robust filtration to match. That said, it is considered a workable choice even for less experienced keepers who can meet its space requirements. Visually, it carries a reticulated scale pattern created by dark scale margins against a silver body, and the fins often taper to extended, slightly curved tips. The anal and pelvic fins can show brighter coloration, adding some contrast to an otherwise silver profile. Like others in the Hypsibarbus genus, it sports two pairs of barbels and a strongly serrated spine at the front of the dorsal fin. A useful identification feature up close. In the wild, these fish are considered commercially important food fish throughout their native range, though populations across the genus are under pressure from river damming and agricultural runoff. Keeping this species well means respecting its origins as an open-water, current-adapted river fish.
