The iridescent killifish (Aphanius mento) is a small but combative species native to shallow, vegetated waters across a broad arc of the Middle East and western Asia, from Turkey and Syria through to Iran and Iraq. Males are considered the most aggressive within the Aphanius genus. Fights between males can end fatally, and unreceptive females risk the same fate if the tank lacks sufficient cover and visual breaks. For these reasons this species is best kept as a single-species setup, ideally with two or three females per male. It is absolutely not a fish for a community aquarium; reports of it killing far larger tankmates are not uncommon. Despite the sharp temperament, it rewards patient keepers with constant activity and genuinely interesting behavioral dynamics, especially during the extended spring-to-summer breeding season when dominant males intensify in color to court females. Breeding is manageable if the setup is right. Eggs are deposited in small batches on algae or plant surfaces and require daily monitoring since adults will readily consume them. This species is rarely stocked in commercial shops and is more likely found through specialist breeders or killifish associations. Given that most Aphanius species face serious conservation pressure in the wild, hobbyists taking on this fish are encouraged to treat captive breeding as a genuine priority rather than an afterthought.
