Cactus Coral

Cactus coral (Isophyllia sinuosa) is a Caribbean LPS coral that tends to get overlooked next to flashier reef species, but it has a quiet appeal that grows on you. Colonies form solid, dome-like masses covered in winding, labyrinthine valleys that give it a brain coral silhouette at first glance. Look closer and you'll notice the ridges and valleys are shorter and more sinuous than a true brain coral, with thin, finely toothed septa running along each valley floor. The color palette leans toward soft greens, lavender, and yellow, often with the valley floors and surrounding walls in noticeably different shades, which gives the whole colony a layered, almost contoured look. In the wild it turns up across a wide stretch of the Western Atlantic, from the Mexican Caribbean and Bermuda down through the Lesser Antilles to Venezuela, typically in shallow, sheltered reef areas down to around 35 meters. In the aquarium it's a reasonably forgiving choice, doing well under moderate light and flow without demanding the kind of precise conditions that push some LPS corals into the expert-only category. It's reef safe and fits naturally into a Caribbean-themed display, though it works just as well in a mixed reef setup.
