The Jewel Pufferfish (Canthigaster solandri) is a small but sharply patterned toby covered in a network of orange-edged spots and detailed lines. The kind of fish that rewards a close look. In the wild, it ranges across the Central Pacific, including the Hawaiian Islands, where it turns up on sheltered rocky reefs, lagoon flats, and seaward reef slopes alike. You'll find individuals picking through open rubble zones, tucking under ledges, and moving among coral heads. Like other members of this genus, it has a broad omnivorous diet that takes in algae, tunicates, mollusks, crustaceans, and even bits of coral and echinoderm. A natural feeding strategy that makes it adaptable in captivity but also means it cannot be trusted around ornamental invertebrates or small tankmates. The species is notably monogamous in the wild and is often seen in pairs, which is a somewhat unusual trait among reef fish of this size. For a puffer, it's considered a manageable choice, and the care level reflects that. Though anyone keeping it should be clear-eyed about its potential to nip at corals and sessile inverts. It's a fish best suited to a FOWLR setup or a carefully chosen mixed reef where fragile invertebrates aren't a priority.
