Found in the blackwater streams and peat swamps of Borneo and peninsular Malaysia, Kottelatlimia pristes is a miniature cobitid loach that occasionally turns up in the hobby as bycatch in mixed shipments, sometimes sold under informal names like 'Sumatran mini royal loach.' It reaches barely an inch and a half at most, with the slender, laterally compressed body shape typical of the true loach family. Like all cobitids, it carries sharp suborbital spines that can flick outward when the fish is stressed. Worth knowing when netting, since these can snag in mesh and cause injury. Despite being listed with an aggressive or territorial disposition, reports from keepers suggest this species is actually quite peaceful toward tankmates and its own kind, though it may opportunistically consume eggs or fry. It seems to do noticeably better when kept in groups of four or more, which helps bring out natural behavior. Good tankmates include small schooling cyprinids, blackwater anabantoids from genera like Sphaerichthys or Parosphromenus, and similarly sized substrate-dwelling loaches. It should not be housed with larger, more boisterous fish that might outcompete it at feeding time. Breeding has not been documented in captivity. It inhabits soft, acidic water with very low pH, so replicating blackwater conditions is essential for long-term success.
