The redbreast acara (Laetacara dorsigera) is a small but personable cichlid from the river systems of central South America, including the Guaporé drainage in Brazil and the Paraguay and middle Paraná drainages extending into Argentina. Despite reaching only around two and a half inches at most, it punches well above its weight in terms of character. Breeding adults develop vivid red-orange coloration across the cheeks, gill covers, and belly. A feature that instantly sets this species apart from its close relatives in the Laetacara genus. Outside of spawning condition, fish tend to show a more subdued palette, though a dark midline spot on the dorsal fin remains a useful identification marker at any age. In the wild, these fish inhabit rivers, and they have a curious defensive behavior worth knowing about. They can leap onto floating vegetation to escape aquatic predators, though this leaves them exposed to threats from above. In the aquarium they are relatively peaceful for a cichlid, making them a reasonable choice for a community setup with appropriately sized tankmates. They are biparental substrate spawners, meaning both parents take an active role in guarding eggs and fry, and watching a pair work together is genuinely rewarding. An intermediate care rating reflects their need for stable, soft-to-moderate water conditions rather than any particular behavioral difficulty.
