The leopard danio (Danio frankei) is a tank-bred variety closely related to the zebra danio, trading the classic horizontal stripes for a scattered pattern of dark spots across a silver-gold body. Whether it's a true wild species or a domesticated form of Danio rerio is still debated among hobbyists and researchers, but in the aquarium it behaves exactly as you'd expect from a danio: fast, bold, and perpetually active. These fish top out around two inches, which puts them squarely in nano territory, and they look genuinely lively weaving through planted setups where their movement adds a sense of energy that slower fish just can't match. Keeping them in groups of five or more isn't just a suggestion. A tight school is when their shoaling behavior really shines, and solitary or paired individuals tend to look lost and can become nippy. Leopard danios are a genuinely forgiving choice for newer fishkeepers. They adapt well to a broad range of water conditions and aren't particularly demanding, though like any fish they do best when introduced to a tank that's already fully cycled and stable. If you want an easy, active, good-looking fish that fills the upper and middle water column, these are hard to beat.
