Terengganu Betta
Betta stigmosa
A peaceful hill stream betta with iridescent spots and fascinating mouthbrooding behavior.

About
Found in the hill streams of Terengganu in Peninsular Malaysia, Betta stigmosa is a small member of the B. pugnax complex. A group of closely related bettas that share a characteristic brown base color overlaid with blue or green iridescent spots. What sets B. stigmosa apart from its relatives is the pattern of alternating bluish and blackish transverse bars in the dorsal and caudal fins, dark banding in the anal fin, and a distinctive interrupted stripe on the opercle. Like all anabantoids, it carries a labyrinth organ that allows it to breathe atmospheric air directly, an adaptation that serves it well in the variable oxygen levels of fast-moving hill streams. Despite the betta name, this is not a fish you keep with a community of active or boisterous tankmates. Calmer companions such as small cyprinids from similar habitats work better, and keeping it alone or as a pair is perfectly viable. Its reproductive behavior is genuinely worth watching: the male is a paternal mouthbrooder who incubates fertilized eggs for up to two weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. Breeding pairs need a tightly sealed tank so developing fry can access warm, humid air above the water surface. Relatively forgiving in general care, this species is approachable even for newer keepers willing to research its specific social needs.
