The Leopard Pufferfish (Canthigaster leoparda) is a small but distinctive toby found across a range stretching from Christmas Island through the Philippines, Indonesia, and out to Guam, where it sits at the eastern edge of its territory before giving way to a closely related species. In the wild, this fish tends to favor deeper reef environments, particularly along steep drop-offs and inside caves at depths well beyond what most divers regularly explore. Which likely explains why it turns up less frequently in the hobby than some of its shallower-dwelling cousins. Like most members of the Canthigaster genus, it carries the classic toby silhouette: a rounded, compact body with a narrow snout, and in this species, bold spotting that gives it its common name. It is typically observed alone or in loose pairs rather than in groups. In the aquarium, the Leopard Toby falls into the intermediate care category, largely because of the well-known puffer tendency to nip at inverts and slow-moving tankmates with ornate fins. Reef keepers should approach with caution. With appropriate tankmates and a varied carnivorous diet, though, it can be a long-lived and characterful resident that brings genuine personality to a species-focused or fish-only setup.
