The elongate loach (Leptobotia elongata) is one of those fish that commands respect the moment you learn its full adult size. This is a loach that can push toward 20 inches, making it less a community fish and more a centerpiece animal for a dedicated specialist setup. In the wild it inhabits the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River, favoring fast-moving currents over rocky substrate, and its elongated, laterally compressed body is well suited to life in turbulent water. Coloration is bold, with the patterning having earned it the nickname 'royal clown' loach, though that name is now also applied to the smaller and more aquarium-friendly Leptobotia pellegrini. Despite its size it is not overtly aggressive toward fish it cannot eat, but its predatory instincts mean tankmate selection is genuinely difficult. It is also a social animal that appears to form structured hierarchies within its own group, so keeping three or four individuals is really the minimum. Which, given the tank footprint required, puts this species firmly out of reach for most hobbyists. Captive breeding has not been achieved outside of hormone-assisted farm production in China. Wild populations are under pressure from dam construction disrupting migration routes, which makes specimens both rare and expensive in the trade. Newly imported fish can be prone to internal flagellate infections, so a careful quarantine period is worthwhile.
