Found in freshwater streams and rivers across Taiwan and parts of mainland China, Acrossocheilus paradoxus is a member of a genus largely confined to southern China and neighboring parts of Vietnam and Laos. It belongs to a group within that genus identifiable by five or six dark vertical bars running down each flank, with each bar spanning roughly two scales in width. A clean, repeating pattern that makes the fish reasonably easy to identify once you're familiar with the group. The mouth is positioned on the underside of the head, the lips are thick and wrap continuously around the corners of the jaw, and there's a hardened sheath along the lower jaw, all features typical of a fish that forages along the bottom and scrapes surfaces for food. A second pair of barbels adds to that bottom-dweller profile. In terms of keeping, this species is considered accessible even for less experienced fishkeepers, which is somewhat unusual for a cyprinid that can push toward nine inches at full size. That adult length is worth keeping in mind when planning a setup. You'll want something roomy enough to give it space to move. It has historically been kept both as an ornamental fish and raised as a food species in its native range.
