A slender, bottom-hugging whiptail catfish from South America, Loricaria simillima is distributed across the Amazon, Orinoco, and La Plata river basins, though its exact taxonomy is genuinely murky. Darker individuals appear to come from acidic blackwater rivers, while paler fish are associated with sediment-heavy whitewater systems, and there is a real possibility that what gets sold under this name represents multiple species or subspecies. Physically it looks much like other loricariids. A flat, armored body with a long whip-like tail extension and a distinctive fleshy lower lip. Despite being labeled as aggressive in some databases, most keepers find it surprisingly passive, even to the point where boisterous tankmates can edge it out at feeding time. Small characins, peaceful cichlids, and corydoras make far better companions than competitive or territorial species. One of its biggest draws is its breeding behavior: the male broods a clutch of eggs tucked against his lower lip, carrying and ventilating them for a week or two. This mouthbrooding-adjacent parental care is unusual enough to make it a rewarding project for an intermediate keeper with patience. The genus is also capable of breathing air when oxygen levels drop, which is a handy adaptation in its sometimes oxygen-poor natural habitats.
