Malayan Loach

The Malayan loach (Pangio semicincta) is one of those species with a genuinely tangled identity. For decades it has been sold in the aquarium trade almost universally under the name kuhli or coolie loach, a label that almost certainly belongs to a Javan species most hobbyists have never actually kept. What people are buying, and enjoying, is very likely this Malay Peninsula native, which also ranges through Sumatra and Borneo. In the wild it inhabits shaded forest streams with muddy substrates and thick bankside vegetation, spending its time near the bottom and doing most of its foraging after dark. The body is yellowish to orange with dark saddle-like markings across the back, though the pattern is famously variable. Saddles may be narrow or broad, restricted to the upper body or extending well past the midline, and older fish can develop quite irregular blotching. Despite being listed as aggressive in some sources, keepers consistently find Pangio species to be gentle community fish that pose no threat to tankmates beyond the occasional opportunistic snack on eggs or fry. They are strongly social and will pile into a shared cave or crevice when resting, so keeping a group of at least five or six is genuinely important for their wellbeing. One practical note: like other cobitids, they have sharp sub-ocular spines that can catch in nets, so use caution when handling.
