Ornate Paradisefish

The ornate paradisefish (Malpulutta kretseri) is one of those fish that stops experienced hobbyists in their tracks. Not because it is flashy, but because of how rarely it shows up and how much it has going on. Native to a small triangle of forested lowland in southwestern Sri Lanka, this tiny labyrinth fish inhabits shallow, shaded, slow-moving streams choked with leaf litter and marginal plants. It almost never ventures into open, unshaded water in the wild, and that preference carries directly into the aquarium. This species comes in three known color forms, with two showing reddish or violet tones in the fins and a third leaning toward blue. All are considered the same species under current taxonomy, and the genus contains no other members. Given its legal protection in Sri Lanka and genuine scarcity in the hobby, most keepers who obtain one treat captive breeding as the primary goal rather than display. A species-only setup is strongly recommended. Temperament is peaceful but variable. Some individuals are quite bold, while others remain persistently shy regardless of what you do to ease their nerves. Breeding follows a bubble-nest pattern typical of its relatives, with the male taking sole responsibility for nest care after spawning. A rewarding project for patient intermediate keepers willing to do things on this fish's terms.
