The masked julie (Julidochromis transcriptus) is a compact cichlid native to a surprisingly narrow stretch of coastline along the northwest shore of Lake Tanganyika, where it hugs the rocky shoreline between Luhanga and Makabola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It's a small fish, adults rarely push past three inches, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in personality. The patterning is bold and clean: a white or cream base broken up by deep black patches and spots that vary noticeably between populations, which has made it a collector's fish for people who enjoy chasing locality variants. In the wild, masked julies live among rocks, picking microorganisms off surfaces and defending their small territories with characteristic cichlid attitude. They're largely solitary in nature, and that territorial streak carries into the aquarium. Keeping them as a bonded pair tends to work best, and providing plenty of rockwork with caves and crevices goes a long way toward keeping the peace and letting them behave naturally. This is a species for keepers who've had some experience with Tanganyikan cichlids and can maintain the hard, alkaline water conditions the rift lakes demand. Get the setup right and they're rewarding, long-lived fish with real character.
