The tiretrack eel (Mastacembelus armatus) is one of the more commonly available spiny eels in the hobby, and for good reason. It's a manageable entry point into a fascinating group of fish that spans tropical Asia and Africa. The name comes from the detailed chain of markings running along its flanks, sometimes also earning it the label white-spotted spiny eel. In the wild, it ranges widely across South and Southeast Asia, from Pakistan through to Vietnam and Indonesia, turning up in highland streams, lowland wetlands, flooded forests, and coastal marshes depending on the season. It's a genuinely adaptable fish in terms of habitat. The small spines along its back are what give the family their common name, though they pose no real threat to people. In the aquarium, this is a nocturnal, bottom-dwelling species that spends daylight hours tucked under décor or half-buried in soft substrate. So fine sand and plenty of hiding spots are non-negotiable. Temperament is generally peaceful toward tankmates that are too large to swallow, but pairing it with small fish is a risk. Keeping two together can lead to friction, though larger groups sometimes work. No breeding has been documented in captivity. With a potential lifespan pushing nearly two decades, this is a long-term commitment and a genuinely rewarding one for intermediate keepers with the space to house it properly.
