Found clinging to the rocky shoreline habitat of Likoma Island in Lake Malawi, Melanochromis joanjohnsonae is a relatively small mbuna cichlid that stays under four inches as an adult. Like most mbuna, it is built for life among boulders and rubble, grazing and defending territory in a landscape of hard, alkaline water. The genus Melanochromis as a whole is known for bold, assertive behavior, and this species is no exception. Keeping it successfully generally means thinking carefully about tank layout and tankmate selection to manage aggression. A species-appropriate setup with plenty of rocks to break sightlines and create territory boundaries goes a long way toward keeping the peace. Because of that behavioral complexity, this fish is generally considered a better fit for keepers who already have some experience with African cichlids rather than those just starting out. It has been documented at Likoma Island in its native range and has also been introduced at Thumbi West Island. Diet in the aquarium is straightforward for an omnivore. A quality cichlid staple with occasional variety covers its nutritional needs well. With reasonable care it can live anywhere from five to eight years.
