Found in the lakes and swamps of the upper Negro River in Brazil and across parts of the Orinoco basin in Colombia and Venezuela, Mesonauta insignis is a peaceful, soft-water cichlid that most hobbyists have probably encountered without realizing it. This species shares such a close resemblance to the flag cichlid (Mesonauta festivus) that the two are routinely sold interchangeably in the trade, and it is genuinely difficult to tell them apart at the store level. Depending on where the fish were originally collected and exported from, you may end up with either species under the same label. In the aquarium, this is a gentle, somewhat timid fish that does well alongside other non-aggressive species. Geophagus and apistogramma make natural tankmates, and it generally coexists without incident with tetras, barbs, and smaller catfish. The peaceful demeanor does shift noticeably during spawning, when pairs become more territorial and defensive. Breeding is a rewarding experience: the pair lays eggs on a flat surface, guards them through hatching, and moves the fry to a pit while they develop. They are attentive parents but can startle easily, which sometimes leads to them eating the young, so a calm, undisturbed setup makes a real difference. An intermediate-level species overall, it rewards patient, thoughtful keeping.
