Pore Coral

Pore coral (Montipora aequituberculata) is one of those Montipora species that can take on genuinely architectural shapes in the right conditions. Colonies grow as flat encrusting sheets or thin plates that stack and overlap in oblique whorls, sometimes curling into partial tubes. That layered, sculptural quality is part of what draws reef keepers to it. Coloration is typically understated: browns, creams, and purples are most common, often with paler margins that highlight the edges of each plate. Occasionally a colony will turn up in brighter hues. Up close, the surface texture is quite distinctive. The corallites are embedded in or slightly raised from the skeleton and surrounded by papillae that frequently fuse into short ridges, sometimes forming small hoods over individual polyps. In the wild this species occupies shallow Indo-Pacific reef environments across a broad tropical to subtropical range, from the Indian Ocean well into the Pacific. In the aquarium it demands the kind of intense lighting and vigorous flow you would associate with a high-energy reef flat, and it does not tolerate neglect in water quality. This is a coral best suited to reefers who already have stable, mature systems dialed in rather than those still working through early setup challenges.
