Pore coral (Montipora delicatula) is a thin-plating Montipora from the Indo-West Pacific, where it grows along shallow reef edges exposed to strong light and active water movement. Its colonies form very thin, single-sided sheets that twist and contort as they develop, giving each piece a somewhat organic, free-form shape rather than the tidy horizontal plates you see in other plating corals. The corallites themselves are quite small and sit in rows between low, irregular ridges running across the coenosteum surface. You really have to look closely to appreciate the fine texture. Coloration is understated: mostly pale brown, fading to an even lighter tone toward the growing edges, with the ridges usually the palest part of the colony. There is nothing flashy about the look, but the delicate structure has its own quiet appeal. In the aquarium this species demands serious attention to both lighting and flow. It comes from a high-energy, sun-drenched habitat and does not adapt well to anything less. It is best suited to experienced reef keepers who already have a stable, well-established system running at peak performance. For the right setup, it is a genuinely interesting coral that rewards careful husbandry with steady, graceful growth.
