Pore coral (Montipora effusa) is one of those Montipora species that rewards a second look. At first glance, colonies appear mostly brown and unremarkable, but the polyps themselves often carry bright contrasting color that brings the whole colony to life. Growth form varies quite a bit. Colonies can develop as encrusting sheets, submassive mounds, or broad unifacial plates that spread horizontally across the rockwork. The surface has a distinctly rough, textured quality, with small but noticeably raised corallites ringed by elongated papillae that give it a bumpy, almost sandpaper-like feel compared to smoother Montipora species. In the wild, it occupies a wide range of reef environments across the Indo-Pacific, from very shallow water down to around 20 meters, suggesting decent adaptability to different light conditions in nature. Though in the aquarium it consistently performs best under high-output lighting with equally strong water movement. Like most members of this genus, it falls into the advanced category, not because Montipora are inherently fragile, but because M. effusa asks for stable, high-quality water chemistry that newer reef tanks often struggle to maintain consistently. It is fully reef safe and poses no threat to neighboring corals through sweeper tentacles or aggressive chemistry.
