Pore coral (Montipora florida) is one of the more architecturally dramatic members of a very large genus, building tall upright whorls of thin, single-sided laminae that can exceed a meter in height in the wild and spread across a considerable footprint on the reef. The structure is genuinely beautiful in a sculptural way, but that elegance comes with a serious caveat: the whorls are extraordinarily fragile and will collapse at the slightest physical disturbance. In the wild this species favors shallow, turbid reef environments across the Indo-West Pacific, so it is accustomed to lower water clarity than many other Montipora species, though it still demands very high light and strong flow in captivity. Coloration runs toward pale brown or soft green, with a rough coenosteum textured by small papillae and a mix of embedded and irregularly angled corallites on small tubercles. This is firmly a coral for experienced reefers. Placement needs to be chosen carefully and then left alone, because even routine tank maintenance brushing against the colony can cause real damage. Given the right conditions and hands-off management, it can become a genuinely impressive centerpiece, but it rewards patience and a well-established system far more than it tolerates beginner mistakes.
