Pore Coral

Pore coral (Montipora floweri) is a species that tends to fly under the radar compared to flashier Montipora varieties, but it rewards patient and experienced reef keepers with a genuinely interesting growth form. Colonies develop in encrusting to submassive shapes, spreading across rock surfaces and building up a bumpy, textured landscape defined by small tubercles that sometimes merge together. The individual corallites are tiny and evenly spaced across and between those bumps, giving the surface a fine, almost woven appearance when viewed up close. Coloration leans toward deep browns and greens rather than anything particularly vivid, so its appeal is more about form than flashiness. In the wild, this species occupies upper reef slopes across a broad swath of the Indo-Pacific, from relatively shallow water down to around 30 meters, where light and water movement are both strong. That natural habitat tells you a lot about what it needs in captivity: intense lighting and vigorous flow are not optional extras here but genuine requirements for long-term health. This is not a forgiving coral for someone still dialing in a new system. It belongs in a mature, stable reef where parameters hold steady and the equipment is up to the task.
