Pore coral (Montipora gaimardi) is a visually textured species from the shallow reefs of the Indo-West Pacific, ranging across a broad band from the eastern Indian Ocean through to the western Pacific. What sets it apart from many other Montipora species is its growth form. Colonies develop from an encrusting base and then push upward into branches that can either splay outward openly or bunch together into a more compact clump. The surface is covered in a fine network of ridges, with tiny corallites positioned both within and between them, giving the skeleton an almost woven appearance up close. Coloration tends toward brown or green, occasionally showing paler tips on the branches, which adds a bit of visual contrast without being flashy. Like most shallow-water Montipora, this species is accustomed to high light intensity and strong water movement in the wild, and it will need both to thrive in captivity. It is considered an advanced coral to keep, best suited to experienced reefers who can maintain consistently stable, high-quality water conditions and deliver the intense lighting this species demands. It is reef safe and will not bother neighboring corals through chemical aggression, though good placement with adequate space is still worth thinking through as colonies grow.
