Pore coral (Montipora hemispherica) is a seldom-kept Montipora from the northern Red Sea and surrounding waters, recorded from shallow reef environments along the coasts of Egypt, Eritrea, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan. Colonies typically grow in an encrusting sheet, though older or larger specimens may develop a domed, hemispherical form. What sets this species apart visually is the surface texture: flattened, contorted branches tend to emerge near the center of the colony, while small raised structures called papillae and tuberculae give the coenosteum a notably coarse, almost bumpy appearance. On branches, these projections can merge into short ridges, adding to the sculptural quality of a mature colony. Coloration is modest, usually grey or pale brown, so this is not a coral you keep for vivid pigmentation. Its appeal lies more in its architectural growth form and its relatively unusual origin within the hobby. Care is firmly in the advanced category. This species demands very high light and strong, consistent water movement, and its Red Sea provenance means it comes from an environment with stable, high-quality water. It is best suited to an established, mature reef system kept by a hobbyist already comfortable pushing flow and light levels. Beginners should look elsewhere first.
