Pore Coral

Pore coral (Montipora hoffmeisteri) is one of those species that looks deceptively simple at first glance but reveals a lot of fine detail up close. Colonies grow in a submassive to encrusting form, sometimes throwing out flattened plate-like edges at the periphery. The surface is covered in small tubercles, raised bumps scattered across the coenosteum, some of which house the tiny immersed corallites. In the wild, coloration tends toward cream and brown, though occasional colonies show brighter hues. It occurs across a broad range of the Indo-Pacific and can be found in most reef environments from shallow water down to around 40 meters, which speaks to its adaptability in nature. In the aquarium, though, that adaptability has limits. This is an SPS coral that asks a lot from your system. Very high light and brisk, consistent flow are non-negotiables, and water quality needs to be kept tight. Like most Montipora species, it will telegraph stress through bleaching or tissue recession before things get critical, but that means you need to already be watching closely. Best suited to established reef systems with stable parameters and a keeper who already has some SPS experience under their belt. Not a beginner coral, but not out of reach for a dedicated intermediate reefer running a dialed-in setup.
