Pore coral (Montipora malampaya) is a visually complex species that can take on several growth forms within a single colony. Flat laminar sheets that stack into whorls or tiers, upright branches that often fuse together, and occasionally columnar structures. The surface texture is notably coarse, covered in elongated coenostial papillae that sometimes merge into short, irregular ridges, giving the coral a rough, tactile quality unlike smoother Montipora species. Coloration is typically brown or green, with the tips of the papillae showing white, which provides a subtle but attractive contrast. In the wild this species occupies upper reef slopes, where light intensity is high and water movement is strong and consistent. Conditions that need to be replicated closely in the aquarium. That makes it a species best suited to experienced reefers who can dial in very high lighting and vigorous, turbulent flow and maintain them reliably over time. Like other Montipora, it is considered reef safe and will not bother neighboring corals through sweeper tentacles or aggressive chemical means, though adequate spacing is still good practice. Water quality stability matters more than chasing specific numbers, and this is not a coral that forgives prolonged lapses in husbandry.
