Pore coral (Montipora millepora) is one of those species that quietly rewards patient, experienced reefers willing to meet its exacting demands. Found across the Indo-Pacific from shallow water down to about 30 meters, it naturally gravitates toward crevices and the undersides of overhangs rather than the open, sun-drenched reef crest. In the wild that preference makes sense. It occupies niches other corals leave behind. Colonies grow in a massive or encrusting form, spreading low and close to the substrate. The corallites are tiny and sunk deep into the surface, giving the skeleton a smooth, finely textured appearance punctuated by small tubercles scattered across the coenosteum. Coloration is typically dark green or brown, which can read as understated compared to flashier Montipora species, but under good lighting the texture becomes its own kind of appeal. In the aquarium this species needs genuinely high flow and intense light to stay healthy. This is not a coral you can tuck into a dim corner and hope for the best. Its care demands place it firmly in the advanced category, best suited to established reef systems where parameters are dialed in and maintained consistently.
