Pore coral (Montipora nodosa) is a Montipora species found across shallow Indo-Pacific reef environments, typically growing from the surface down to around 30 meters. It develops in massive, submassive, or encrusting colony forms, and its surface has a distinctive bumpy, papillate texture produced by fused thecal papillae surrounding the corallites, along with additional coenosteum papillae across the skeleton. That textured surface is one of the easier ways to identify it in a tank or on the reef. Coloration tends toward pale brown or green, though blue morphs also appear and can shift toward purple in photographs depending on the lighting spectrum, which sometimes leads to confusion when shopping online. In the aquarium, this coral sits firmly in the advanced category. It demands very high light and strong, consistent flow to stay healthy, and it does not forgive lapses in water quality the way hardier Montipora species might. That said, it is a true reef-safe coral and poses no aggression concerns toward neighbors. Reefers who can maintain stable, high-end parameters and deliver the right flow and light intensity will find it a rewarding piece with real visual texture and interesting growth form. Beginners are better served starting elsewhere in the Montipora genus before working up to this one.
