Pore coral (Montipora tortuosa) is one of the more challenging members of a genus that already keeps experienced reefers on their toes. Native to the Indo-West Pacific, including waters around Singapore, it grows in the well-lit, high-energy zones of tropical reefs where water movement is constant and intense. Like other montiporas, it tends to form encrusting or plating sheets that spread across the rockwork, and its surface is covered with the fine pore-like texture characteristic of the genus. Subtle in appearance but detailed up close. Getting it to thrive in a home system means committing to serious output from your lighting and a robust flow regimen that mimics the brisk currents of its natural habitat. This is not a coral for a system that is still finding its footing. Water quality needs to be consistently excellent, and any lapses in stability tend to show up quickly. For reefers who have dialed in a mature, high-performance system and want to push into more demanding territory, M. tortuosa can be a rewarding challenge. It is reef safe and will not prey on neighboring corals, but give it room to spread, since like most montiporas it is a persistent grower when conditions are right.
