Pore Coral

Pore coral (Montipora venosa) is one of the more understated members of the wide-ranging Montipora genus, forming large, massive colonies across the Indo-Pacific from the surface down to around 65 meters. Its distribution spans a broad tropical to subtropical band, and in the wild it turns up in most reef environments. Shallow rubble zones, fore-reef slopes, and deeper structural sections alike. The colony surface is distinctive under close inspection: the corallites are a mixed arrangement, with some sitting slightly raised above the surface and others forming small funnel-shaped depressions. Notably absent are the tubercular and papillate surface features seen in many of its relatives, giving this coral a comparatively smooth, almost understated texture. Coloration runs to pale browns and muted blues, the latter of which can shift toward purple in photographs depending on lighting conditions. In the aquarium it demands the commitment you would expect from an advanced-level coral. Very high light intensity and strong, consistent water movement are non-negotiable. This is not a beginner's coral, and it will decline quickly if either parameter slips. Reefers who can dial in and maintain those conditions, however, will find it a genuinely interesting colony-forming species rather than the usual beginner plating Montipora.
