Verrill's Ringed Rice Coral (Montipora verrilli) is a thin, encrusting pore coral that spreads itself flat across substrate in the low, wave-swept reef flat environments where it originates. The colony structure is fairly understated at a glance. Small corallites around a millimeter across sit largely embedded within the coenosteum, their papillae distributed in an even, almost geometric pattern across the surface. The coloration is where things get interesting: a generally brown base tone is punctuated by distinctly blue corallite centers, which can shift toward pink depending on lighting conditions and how a photo is taken. It is a subtle beauty rather than a flashy one, the kind of coral that rewards closer inspection. In the aquarium, this species demands serious attention to both light and flow, making it a better fit for experienced reefers who already have a dialed-in system. Very high lighting and brisk, consistent water movement are needed to reflect the energetic reef flat conditions it calls home. Like most Montipora, it is reef safe and will not bother neighboring corals through aggression, though encrusting forms can slowly claim territory through growth. If your system is up to the challenge, it is a genuinely rewarding piece of natural reef flat architecture.
