Pore Coral

Pore coral (Montipora vietnamensis) is one of the more architecturally interesting members of a genus that can sometimes look uniform and flat. Rather than spreading as a simple crust, colonies develop an encrusting or laminar base from which dense clusters of short, upright branches emerge, giving the whole structure a textured, almost sculpted appearance. The coloration is distinctive too: a deep chocolate brown overall, contrasted by pale white ridges running across the coenosteum and white tips capping the branches. That two-tone pattern makes it easier to identify than many of its Montipora relatives. In the wild it occupies shallow reef environments and rocky foreshores across the Indo-West Pacific, where it's exposed to plenty of light and good water movement. That natural habitat tells you a lot about what it needs in a reef tank. This is not a coral you tuck into a shaded corner or a low-flow zone. It demands consistently intense lighting and brisk, turbulent flow to thrive. Combined with the sensitivity typical of the genus to water quality swings, this is a coral best suited to hobbyists who already have a stable, mature reef system running and a solid grasp of coral husbandry. Rewarding for those ready for the challenge.
