The Multicolour Dottyback (Ogilbyina novaehollandiae) is a small but boldly patterned saltwater fish native to the inshore reefs of the Great Barrier Reef. As the alternate name Red-and-green Dottyback hints, its coloration is a genuine two-tone affair, making it easy to pick out against a coral backdrop. In the wild, this species sticks close to the reef structure, tucking into holes and crevices rather than venturing out into open water, and that same instinct carries directly into captive life. Give it plenty of rockwork with caves and overhangs and it will settle in quickly, claiming a territory and defending it with the assertiveness typical of dottybacks as a group. That territorial streak is worth taking seriously when planning tankmates. Smaller or more passive fish can find themselves harassed, so choosing robust, similarly sized companions makes a real difference. The species has been bred in captivity, which is a good sign for long-term availability outside of wild collection. At a maximum of just under four inches, it fits comfortably in a reasonably sized reef or fish-only system, though intermediate-level experience is recommended given its temperament and the general demands of keeping marines successfully.
