The Bahia Brain Coral (Mussismilia braziliensis) is an endemic species found exclusively along the Brazilian coastline in the Southwest Atlantic, where it plays a significant role as a reef-builder in shallow and subtidal environments down to around 30 meters. In the wild, colonies develop into large, heavy domes that cap reef structures, and that same growth form makes established aquarium specimens genuinely impressive centerpieces over time. Up close, the surface texture is the real draw. The corallites are tightly packed and irregular, giving the colony that characteristic labyrinthine appearance common to brain corals, with small rounded, bead-like teeth along the septa that catch light in interesting ways. Coloration varies quite a bit between individuals, running through combinations of blue-grey, green, and yellow, so picking a specimen in person is worth doing if you can. For a large-polyp stony coral, this one is relatively forgiving, making it a reasonable choice for reef keepers who are still building their experience with LPS species. Moderate lighting and moderate flow suit it well, and it generally coexists peacefully with other reef inhabitants. Growth is slow, as you would expect from a massive coral, so patience is part of the deal with this one.
