Knobby cactus coral (Mycetophyllia aliciae) is a large polyp stony coral native to the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, where it can be found across a wide range of reef environments from shallow water down to considerable depths. Colonies grow as loosely attached, often circular plates, and the surface texture is what really sets this species apart. Thick, heavily toothed septo-costae give it a distinctly rugged, almost sculptural appearance. Valley formation is minimal, particularly toward the center of the colony, and where valleys do develop they can contain multiple rows of mouths. There is no columella present. Coloration tends to run toward brown or green, commonly with pale white centers that add some contrast to the overall look. In the aquarium, this is a forgiving choice for reef keepers who are still getting comfortable with LPS corals. It does well under moderate lighting and moderate flow, and its Caribbean origins mean it adapts reasonably well to typical reef tank conditions without demanding the kind of precise fine-tuning that some Indo-Pacific species require. Placement on the sandbed or a lower rock ledge where it can spread out as a plate suits it well. Overall it is a solid, low-drama coral for a Caribbean-themed or mixed reef setup.
