Ridgeless Cactus Coral

The ridgeless cactus coral (Mycetophyllia reesi) is one of those quietly distinctive corals that rewards a closer look. Unlike its relatives in the same genus, it completely lacks the radiating ridges and valleys that give most cactus corals their characteristic texture. The surface is smooth and open, with corallite centres running parallel to the plate edges rather than fanning outward. Colonies grow as thin, flat plates that often mold themselves to whatever surface they settle on, attaching either at the center or along one side. Coloration tends toward dark grey-brown or a muted bluish-brown, occasionally with some mottling that breaks up the otherwise uniform appearance. In the wild, this species is found across the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, typically on lower reef slopes sheltered from strong wave action, from very shallow water down to around 40 meters. That preference for calmer, lower-energy environments translates well to the aquarium. Moderate flow and moderate lighting suit it fine, and its care level is considered appropriate for beginners. It is reef safe and unlikely to cause trouble with neighbors given adequate spacing. For hobbyists interested in Atlantic reef biotopes, this is a solid and uncommon choice.
