Silver Mylossoma (Mylossoma duriventre) is a deep-bodied, laterally compressed fish from the river systems of South America, native to the Paraguay, lower Paraná, and lower Uruguay basins. In the wild it is tightly connected to seasonal floodplains, moving into flooded forest and grassland areas to feed when water levels rise. A lifestyle that speaks to its need for space and variety in captivity. Despite being classified as an omnivore in the aquarium trade, this species leans heavily toward plant-based foods in the wild, and a diet rich in vegetation, fruits, and greens will keep it in good condition. Growing to nearly ten inches, it is a substantial fish that needs a large, well-filtered aquarium and plenty of open swimming room. A single specimen rarely thrives. These are social fish that do better in the company of their own kind or similarly sized, peaceful tankmates. Their shiny, almost mirror-like flanks give them a clean, understated look that suits a naturalistic South American biotope setup nicely.
