The red pencilfish (Nannostomus mortenthaleri) is one of the most visually intense members of its genus, with males displaying vivid red coloration running between the dark lateral stripes from snout to tail, complemented by a distinctive white-then-red dorsal fin and near-uniformly red ventral and anal fins. Females show a similar but subtler version of the same pattern. It originates from Peru and, like most pencilfish, prefers soft, acidic blackwater conditions that mirror its natural habitat. Despite its small size, this species carries a notably bold temperament compared to its close relatives. Males spar constantly during the day, and in tight quarters that rivalry can escalate to real injury. A roomy tank with plenty of visual breaks in the decor is important, and keeping a group of ten or more helps distribute aggression and brings out bolder, more natural behavior. It fits well alongside other small, non-aggressive species and works particularly nicely as a dither fish above Apistogramma pairs. One thing worth knowing: like other Nannostomus, it shifts to a much paler color at night, which can alarm new owners, but this is a normal automatic rhythm rather than a sign of stress. Breeding is possible in a dedicated setup, though it takes some patience and preparation. A rewarding species for the intermediate keeper who can give it the space and compatible tankmates it deserves.
